A vowel is a sound in spoken language, such as English ah! [?? ??] or oh! [o? o?], pronounced with an open vocal tract so that there is no build-up of air pressure at any point above the glottis. This contrasts with consonants, such as English sh! [?? ??], where there is a constriction or closure at some point along the vocal tract. A vowel is also understood to be syllabic: an equivalent open but non-syllabic sound is called a semivowel.

This vowel change has much to do with the overall accent pattern assigned to each word. A schwa represents a neutral vowel. Lojban has six vowels, /a e i o u ə/ written . The last vowel is all you need for the marshmallow effect. Anglophones cannot pronounce the last vowel in Volapük. The final vowel of a noun or of the definite article can be left out and replaced by an apostrophe. Liaison occurs in spoken French when a word which ends with a consonant that is normally not pronounced is followed by a word which begins with a vowel. In these cases, the consonant is sometimes pronounced as if it were at the beginning of the following word.
